Meredith McMaster Millinery

My love affair with all thing millinery began 7 – 8 years ago when I became frustrated with trying to purchase hats which would fit my rather large head!! I began a TAFE course after two and half years and lots of blisters and tears and money emerged as a 'milliner'.

I love wearing hats and also love seeing ladies wearing something which I have created. I take my inspiration from just about anything, especially the shapes and colours of nature. The design genius of John Galliano and the boldness of the late Isabella Blow inspire me.

Designing and making 'stand out' pieces for race days and bridal parties comprise the majority of my work and I continue to develop new techniques and explore with new materials.

My highest priority is elegance and design combined in a piece which is easy for the customer to wear and in which she will feel like a princess.

All of Meredith's masterpieces can be found at 'The Hat Box'.  www.thehatbox.com.au

Karen Valentine Millinery

It was an absolute delight to speak with the lovely Karen Valentine, Karen is an accomplished milliner and has worked in the fashion industry for over 15 years. Karen took 2 years off to have a break to have 2 bundles of joy. Karen began a love affair with fashion when she was coming home from school and dressmaking with her mum. Karen worked in the field of Fashion Design, and being a regular race goer found her niche as a milliner.

Karen of course used the Winter felts and sinamy but Karen finds the new product Jisin a real excitement for the millinery world. Karen says it is easy to use and can make some exciting shapes and it bends to make magnificent sculptural pieces. Karen loves one on one consultations for special events and has a young hip fashion forward eye for fashion on the field couture pieces. As well as the races, brides and formals are a large part of Karen's clientèle. Racewear is very seasonal says Karen, but every year Karen stretches her creativity to stay versatile. This year Karen says the trend are going to be bright yellow, all shades of blue with aqua being a stand out, and white to stay away from the doom and gloom.

A wide selection of Karen's millinery is availiable from 'The Hat Box.  www.thehatbox.com.au

The Hat Box

There is something special in every Eastern state. Melbourne has Royal Arcade, Sydney has The Strand and Brisbane you have the most delightful and most charismatic of all; Brisbane Arcade.

This is an Aladdin's cave of treasures, with the jewel in the crown being 'The Hat Box'. Ladies, this shop is about us. You cannot walk by without amazing hats and facinators drawing you in.

Dale Olsson, who adores the races and fashion owns this treasure chest of femininity. Dale is not a milliner herself but has learnt so much about the technical aspects of millinery. Dale has searched Australia for the finest designers and displays fifteen designers from around Australia. “Each milliner has a distinctive style so there is something for everyone.” Dale said. Dale can also organize special orders for her customers to match an outfit, for brides or Fashions on the Field entrants.

When you want that special look for a day, consult with dale about your outfit and look as Dale is a frequent Fashion winner in both Brisbane and Melbourne.

Last year 'The Hat Box' was asked to hold its own show in the Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival. What an honor. In June Dale is off to London's Royal Ascot where she will be talking business with Phillip Treacy and Stephen Jones.

Ladies and Gentlemen (as 'The Hat Box' has a huge selection of mens hats as well), if you have any doubts about your ensemble this Carnival, be sure to drop in to see Dale. I am sure Dale has the perfect piece for you.
