Tuesday Evening in Melbourne I had the pleasure to attend and have a chat to the wonderful 'Milliners in Training' at Kangan Institute. I did feel a little out of my depth having to chat in front of legends of Millinery including Serena Lindeman, Kim Fletcher, Paris Kyne and Icons in this area that have been Hatting for many years, although it was all about learning and appreciating the work of the students. Melissa Jackson took me through a Q and A and made me feel very comfortable in sometimes a very uncomfortable position. The level of work way surpassed my expectation with the quality of work all looking so professional and polished.
It is fantastic to learn to make your own hat for the races, but these Milliners in training are now learning to forge their name in the industry. I can let you in on a secret. One Certificate 4 student sold one of her pieces to one of the finest 'Hat Shops' in Melbourne.
This is not surprising when you look at the level of work. I had the pleasure of having a chat with many of the students about their work and where their ideas are coming from. Looking at all the Certificate's you can definitely see the progression of the students work year by year and a progression. This is where I think it is invaluable to be educated formally in this area. It takes you to a new level and you have done your time learning in the industry before you step out on your own. Really it does come down to the level of your tutors and how well they teach you. All the tutors are so well respected in Millinery and have 'Hatted' the best. Without the skill and technique of the tutors passing on their craft and knowledge you would not see the amazing result of Hats on display, of course you have to have talent there as well. I thank the students of Certificate 3 welcoming on Tuesday evening and asking me to speak. I will remind all that the wonderful Melissa Jackson told us that Kangan Institute is the only place where this level of Millinery (Ceertificate 4) is taught.
Congratulations to all students and tutors for putting on a wonderful show and giving us a peek into their world. If this is the beginning, I cannot wait for the story to progress. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time. Proud Sponsors of the night were Torb & Reiner and Cleggs.
