Derby Day is the epitome of racing tradition and elegance. It is known to be the best day of racing with 9 group races with fantastic amounts of Prize money. Derby Day this year was such a hit and really I was trying to see faux pas, but the walk of shame on the way out, was the walk of Fame! No one looking too straggly or holding shoes. Ballet flats from the purse were all on feet. Carnival is just in the first day so toward Oaks (Blokes) Day we begin to start seeing really messy sites. Congratulations to all on not only being so elegant, but the behaviour of everyone was brilliant. The police had a very quiet crowd and no loutish behaviour that I saw.
Derby Day is a traditional black and white day and I do love the tradition of the races, as I love the races just as much as the fashion. Throw a splash of small colour in there for good measure although in the birdcage you see more colour than members and the birdcage.
Fashions on the Field is at an all time high, wonderful sportsmanship and beautiful outfits as well as Millinery. In fact I found the Millinery this year to hit a new High.
There are definitely very different areas of the course. 120,000 people and all in little separate groups, but all to celebrate, whether it be the horses, the fashion or a get together for a few happy drinks.
The lawn attracts everyone wanting to have a great day out with blankets and fun and tips and punting with plastic glasses in hand. Fashions on the Field precinct is like Melbourne Cup Fashion Week. I love this where everyone has the opportunity to showcase their outfit. The birdcage, well it is mad, I don't think many people know there are horses there. I even lose myself and start wielding swords and drinking ridiculous amounts of Champagne. I head through the members to see all the local racing faces that are there every week and this is as fashionable as the Fashion Precinct itself. 'The Terrace', where my husband and I sit, is old school, but where you see the most couture pieces of Millinery and ladies wearing designer labels. This is where allot of the 'Racing Fashion' inspiration is taken and how I will work out my outfit for Spring Carnival. These ladies and gentlemen are very fashion forward and are travelling to pick out new horses all over the world. They are constantly heading to Ascot, Hong Kong, Singapore and own the most credible horses in racing. When picking my race wear, I have to incorporate my own personality keeping it classic enough to be in members and 'The Terrace', have enough comfort to make 1200 meters around the track in heels. Interview the fashion contestants and play the birdcage shenanigans.
Here are a few photos to go on with but we have over 1500 photos heading your way just for Derby Day so stay tuned. Everyone on Fashions on the Field will be showcased. Congratulations to Lisa Wellings winning on Derby Day Fashions on the Field 2012.
